Nuclear medicine and prospects for its development in Russia and in the world

According to the forecasts of analysts of the National Research Nuclear University "MEPHI"The global volume of the nuclear medicine market in 2020 will be $ 24 billion, and in 2030 – already $ 43 billion. The Russian market will increase to $ 1.2 billion in 2020 and will reach $ 3.5-4 billion in 2030. The development of nuclear medicine is interested in both the government and individual companies.

What is nuclear medicine

Nuclear medicine – This is one of the sections of clinical medicine, which uses radionuclide drugs for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, and also applies a radiation therapy method. It is mainly necessary for the diagnosis and treatment of oncological diseases.

Now nuclear medicine is divided into three main directions:

  • radionuclide diagnosis (positron-emission tomography or PET);
  • radiation therapy (direct irradiation of cancer);
  • Radionuclide therapy (radioactive isotope is introduced into the tumor).

Radioactive isotopes are used in all three directions, thus radioactive medicine consumes 50% of their stock in the world. Such isotopes include, in particular, radiopharmaceuticals, such as fluorideoxyglucosis: it is used in positron-emission tomography at 95% of cancer. Nuclear medicine makes it possible to conduct studies of all organs of the human body, it is used in cardiology, endocrinology, pulmonology and in other directions of medicine.

Accuracy of research using radioactive isotopes helps to identify cancer in the early stages, and to deal with it effectively. At the same time, the radiopharmaceuticals have a short and not very harmful half-life for a person (cause minimal damage to health, incommensurable with benefit from treatment and diagnostics). One injection of the drug and PET is enough to reveal even a small metastasis.

The nuclear medical services market is divided into several segments, in particular on the production of radiopharmaceuticals, engineering equipment for diagnosis and therapy, the construction of nuclear medicine objects and directly the provision of services to the population.

World experience in nuclear medicine

The main market that affects global indicators on nuclear medicine is the US market that occupies 40% of the industry. In addition, Japan and some European states succeed in the sphere of nuclear medicine. Russia at the same place is one of the leaders in the production of raw materials medical isotopes.

GE Healthcare, Bayer Diagnostics, Toshiba, Siemens and Philips are considered leaders in the world in the world. According to Rosatom Corporation, three trends are dominated in the world:

  • Molybdenum production transition With highly enriched in low-enriched uranium. It is expensive, but improves safety. At low-enriched uranium, South Africa, Australia and the United States are now working.
  • Production of medical products According to the international GMP standard. These are international norms that need to be adhere to when creating a final product.
  • Studies of alpha-emitting isotopeswhich allow you to fight problem types of oncology: tumors that are difficult to remove and on which radiotherapy does not work.

Nuclear medicine in Russia

Russia's share in the global nuclear medicine market is 4.9%, and the average annual growth trend is measured in 5%. According to forecasts of the National Research Nuclear University "MEPhI", such a dynamic may lead to the fact that by 2020 the nuclear medicine market of the Russian Federation will be $ 15 billion.

Back in 2009, in the framework of the national project "Health" in Russia, they launched a national oncological program, according to which cancellations are conducted, the qualifications of health workers increase, the construction of new oncocentres is being built. But a separate program "The development of nuclear medicine in the Russian Federation" has not yet been adopted.

Nevertheless, the Russian government in the past year agreed on the Military Medicine Development Scheme of Nuclear Medicine compiled by the Ministry of Health: it was included in the Health Development Program. The key direction of the roadmap on nuclear medicine is the creation of new radiopharmaceuticals, the development of proton and carbon therapy. Investments in the division will be 1 billion rubles.

Russian companies in nuclear medicine

The Russian nuclear market is represented by Rosatom, FMBA, the Ministry of Health, LLC Radiopreparat.

One of the key players in the nuclear medicine industry is considered to be the Rosatom state corporation, which specializes in the development of nuclear technologies, nuclear energy and nuclear medicine. It is developing radiopharmaceuticals, radiotherapy complexes and conducts work on the creation of centers of nuclear medicine in Russia. The plans of the company – to win at least 12% of the world market for 2030, while working on maximum import substitution.

The development of positive-emission tomography in Russia is engaged in Rosnano. Back in 2014, she began to introduce PET diagnostics in different regions of the state, opening the centers of nuclear medicine "Pat Technology". Now they make up a network of 11 centers throughout the country, including in Kursk, Yekaterinburg, Ufa, Tambov, Samara and Moscow. Also, the company itself produces radiopharmaceuticals for PET and CT.

Since 2014, 73 thousand patients passed through the network of centers, 90% of the appeals were insurance cases under the CHI policy.

Nuclear medicine in the Russian Federation in 2019

At the state level, nuclear medicine is supported in several programs. So, according to the National Project "Health" of medical institutions received money to buy modern techniques. According to the federal program "Development of the Medical and Pharmaceutical Industry of Russia to 2020", funds were allocated to upgrade production. Objects associated with nuclear medicine and oncology are also actively erected, specialized centers and hospitals.

Nuclear oncological center in Primorye. Construction of an object where they will diagnose and treat oncoboles, scheduled on the Russian island in 2019. For this, the leadership of the Primorsky Territory allocated five hectares of land. It is planned that the center will take about 6 thousand patients per year. Project participants – Rosatom State Corporation, Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation and the State Development Corporation of WEB.

Center for nuclear medicine in Dimitrovgrad. In the spring of 2019, it is planned to open a proton oncocenter in Dimitrovgrad of the Ulyanovsk region. He is licensed and ready for work, at the same time will take 1.2 thousand people per year. The uniqueness of the center is that it provides all the possibilities of nuclear medicine: from the initial diagnosis of cancer to the rehabilitation of patients. The center will work: consultation, proton center, radionuclide therapy housing and a 24-hour hospital.

Center for Nuclear Medicine in Novosibirsk. In the spring of this year, the object will also be opened in Novosibirsk. According to project representatives, the equipment is already brought and is tested before the start of work. The center will consist of separating the diagnosis and therapeutic hull. Also in the institution will be its cyclotron, which will produce radiopharmaceuticals (30,000 per year). Another feature of the center will be the installation for the Gamma-Knife surgery, which will help heal the head oncology without surgical intervention and trepanation.

RESULTS

Nuclear medicine is one of the priority directions of the development of the Russian economy. Among the main problems of the sector, it is possible to allocate that the country lacks high-quality domestic production equipment, as well as medical personnel that will work with radiation technologies. The training of specialists is now engaged in several institutions, in particular the Center for Nuclear Medicine Niau Mafi.

The course for importing and developing equipment for nuclear medicine was taken by Russian companies, for example, Rosatom State Corporation. But then whether the equipment can produce serially depends on direct demand.

The current legal framework also requires refinement. The interdepartmental working group will work on this, created in the framework of the Road Map of the Department of Health Development.The expert group consists of representatives of various government departments, as well as Rosnano, Rosatom companies, Rostech.
