The badge of military doctors awarded the degree of doctor was one of the first badges in the Russian Empire.
Breastplates were an obligatory accessory of the official uniform of the military and were worn at half the height from the collar to the waist. In 1866, the signs of higher educational institutions, the so-called academic ones, appear. For the first time, academic signs were introduced in educational institutions related to the military department, and a little later – for engineers of communications, mining, graduates of a construction school, doctors of medicine, women doctors, etc.
The Imperial Military Medical Academy was granted the right to raise the graduates of the academy to the academic degrees of a doctor and doctor of medicine – doctors. Pharmacist and Master of Pharmacy – pharmacists. In 1871, an academic badge was established for military doctors who were awarded the degree of “doctor” and completed a course at the Imperial Medical and Surgical Academy or at one of the Russian universities, and 26 years later the “medical” badge of military doctors was approved. It was issued to military doctors – graduates of the medical faculties of universities and the Imperial Military Medical Academy.
The breastplate was a state coat of arms in silver superimposed on a half-wreath consisting of laurel and oak branches, tied with a ribbon at the bottom. At the intersection of the branches, a golden image of the Cup of Hippocrates is superimposed, to which two golden snakes crawl from the branches of a half-wreath. The snake and hippocratic cup were gold. The badge was worn on the right side of the chest with all forms of clothing, both during service and when retiring.
