Nikolai Kochenkov Bryansk
I got into medicine thanks to my older sister. She is a therapist by education, she graduated from the Kursk Medical Institute. When my sister came for the holidays, she talked a lot about her student life. Sometimes I myself visited Kursk, stayed at her hostel. All this I really liked. It turns out that my little sister, without knowing it, orientated me in the profession.
After leaving school, I simultaneously tried to enter the Kursk Medical Institute and the Kirov Military Medical Academy. True, he did not pass the competition. He returned to Bryansk, got a job as a turner. A year later, he again tried to enter a medical university – now Smolensk. From the second time, medicine still accepted me.
In my second year, I already worked as an emergency doctor, orderly, nurse, paramedic. And when it was time to choose a profession in my fifth year, I really wanted to be an operating doctor – a urologist or an obstetrician-gynecologist. Having learned about this, my mentor, Professor Nikolai Konstantinovich Nikifarovsky, advised me to connect my life with obstetrics and gynecology. Perhaps it was he who gave me a ticket to the profession.
After graduating from the medical institute, I was sent for an internship to Bryansk, namely to the Bryansk regional hospital. At that time, the internship was led by Elvira Andreevna Voronina – a strong woman, an excellent professional, a wonderful person. There were just over thirty of us interns. And she was the first to offer me a permanent job in the regional maternity hospital. Although they could well have been sent as an obstetrician to some remote and very remote village …
They began to prepare me for work in the maternity hospital. In my internship, at the age of twenty-three, I already had a caesarean section. It only remained to wait for distribution. And it came – I was sent to the antenatal clinic of the clinic of the Bryansk Automobile Plant. I worked in the polyclinic for exactly a year, and then Elvira Andreevna took me to the regional maternity hospital for a vacant position. It was in 1986. Since then I have been working.
Then there was a reform – perinatal centers were organized in maternity hospitals with emergency consultative care departments. Our main task is to provide emergency assistance in difficult childbirth. For this, teams of specialists from the ECP department were formed: an obstetrician-gynecologist, an anesthesiologist and a neonatologist (children's doctor). The brigades are in a state of constant "combat" readiness. We work throughout the region, in parallel we provide assistance to the women of the city.
We really "give birth". Together with a woman – starting from the moment when she gets the examination, and ending with the discharge. All team! This includes a neonatological service, a maternity unit, and a pathology department.
Of course, the head physician of the hospital, Alexander Ivanovich Pyokhov, also plays an important role. Thanks to him, autonomous food was installed in our hospital. And if suddenly some kind of accident happens on the scale of the city, then our work will not stop, there will be no problems with the supply of electricity.
We have unique equipment in our arsenal. For example, a portable ventilator. With it, we can come to any district of the region, connect the device to the lungs of a child weighing from 3, as well as an adult up to 68 kilograms, and deliver it to the hospital. If necessary, we can transport to Moscow. Perhaps there is no such equipment even in neighboring regions.
Previously, all births were long. It used to be that a woman could give birth at once with two doctors: with me on Monday, with another doctor on Tuesday. Once, childbirth lasted three days! So they passed it on to each other … Now it’s different. Obstetricians and gynecologists even have a professional saying: "The sun should not rise twice over a woman's head." We are not monkeys who give birth at night, but not during the day, because the contractions stop by themselves. When a woman goes into labor, after 12 hours we must already tell in which direction we will turn the process in order to make it as safe as possible for the mother and child.
Since 1986, I have been teaching, working in our Bryansk medical school, where paramedics and nurses are trained. By the way, also an anniversary!
The main thing is that everything is for the benefit and in the interests of the child and mother. I tell husbands: “Fulfill the desires of your wives. While she is pregnant, she must feel like a queen!” For women, there is also advice: “Ask for whatever you want. You are queens! If you want flowers every day – tell your husband about it, if you want a conger eel canapé at one in the morning – ask for this too … Husbands will do everything for you! And this is not a fairy tale, this is reality. After all, the birth of a child is a miracle that deserves a beautiful romantic story, even a fairy tale if you like!
