The Department of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine was organized in February 2020 to train doctors in the specialty "Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine".
The founder of the department is the Honored Worker of Science of the Russian Federation, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Ponomarenko Gennady Nikolaevich.
In May 2021, the Department of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine was merged with the Department of Physiotherapy and Medical Rehabilitation.
The staff of the department actively participated in the writing of 4 national guidelines: "Physiotherapy", "Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine", "Sanatorium Treatment", "Rehabilitation of the Disabled", developed clinical recommendations based on evidence in physical and rehabilitation medicine.
History of the Department of Physiotherapy and Medical Rehabilitation.
In the autumn of 1887, the Department of Physical Methods of Treatment and Non-Drug Therapy was opened and began its work, becoming the first educational and methodological academic center for additional professional education of certified physiotherapists not only in Russia, but also in the world.
Professor V. A. Shtange was invited to lead the Department of Physical Methods of Treatment and Non-Drug Therapy, well known for his functional breath holding test (Stange test) and one of the founders of classical massage. In September-October 1887, he gave the first lectures on balneology, massage, koumiss treatment and methods of apparatus physiotherapy at the newly opened department.
In 1918, after the death of Professor V.A. Shtange, Professor S.A. Shcherbak and, independently of him, the doctrine of the neuro-reflex mechanism of action of therapeutic physical factors. His merit is the opening in Leningrad of a research physiotherapy institute, which became the base of the department, which received a new name – the department of physiotherapy.
On the initiative of S. A. Brushtein, in 1923 in Petrograd, a scientific and practical society of physiotherapists was organized, which is still working, the journal Physiotherapy was published, the First All-Union Congress of Physiotherapists was organized and held, chaired by Professor S. A. Brushtein himself. Brushtein brought up a galaxy of prominent scientists and specialists in the field of physiotherapy (B.M. Broderzon, A.F. Verbov, E.T. Zalkindson, N.M. Rudnitsky), who were the pride of the Leningrad school of physiotherapists.
Since 1931, the department was headed by Privatdozent E.T. Zalkindson. During the war years 1941-1945. professor E.T. Zalkindson was the deputy head of the evacuation hospital, was the chief physiotherapist of the Leningrad Front, developed the organization and tactics of physiotherapy in wartime conditions, and was awarded government awards.
In 1944, the department was headed by Associate Professor N. N. Mishchuk, who made a great contribution to the invention and development of new medical equipment. During the war years, N. N. Mishchuk was the chief physiotherapist of the besieged Leningrad, then he was the director of the Research Institute of Physiotherapy, and after the war he contributed to the restoration of sanatoriums and resorts in the Leningrad region.
From 1954 to 1958, the duties of the head of the department were temporarily performed by the candidate of medical sciences L. A. Komarova. In 1958, the department was transformed into an associate professor course under the guidance of associate professor L.A. Komarova. Professor L.A.Komarova headed the department for 43 years.
The main directions of the scientific work of the department in the 70-90s were the clinical and physiological rationale for the therapeutic use of physical factors in cardiology, neuropathology, pediatrics, and clinical immunology.The department carried out scientific work and dissertations on physiotherapy of hypertension, diseases of the peripheral nervous system, methods of complex (combined and combined) physiotherapy, immunomodulatory effects of physical factors.
In 1997, V.V. was appointed head of the Department of Physiotherapy. Kiryanov. In the same year, the department was renamed and became known as the Department of Physiotherapy and Balneology.
In 2011, in connection with the merger of SPb MAPO and SPb GMA im. I.I. Mechnikov and the organization of the North-Western State Medical University. I. I. Department of Physiotherapy and Balneology with a course of rehabilitation, hardware cosmetology and reflexology FPC in St. Petersburg State Medical Academy im. I.I. Mechnikov was established in 2000 by the rector of the Academy A.V. Shabrov. The department was headed until 2011 by Doctor of Medical Sciences A.G. Shiman. For many years Professor A.G. Shiman was a member of the board of the St. Petersburg Scientific Medical Society of Physiotherapists and Balneologists, was a member of dissertation councils at the St. Petersburg State Medical Academy named after I.I. Mechnikov and VMA named after S.M. Kirov. Author of 25 monographs and guidelines for physicians, 30 patents for inventions, 220 journal articles, guidelines, theses.
One of the first departments of acupuncture in the former Soviet Union was opened at the Leningrad State Institute for the Improvement of Doctors (LenGIDUV) in 1977. The first head of the department was Doctor of Medical Sciences Professor A.T. Kachan. Since 2000, the department was headed by Professor N.N. Bogdanov. More than 6,000 acupuncturists have been trained at the department. Exit cycles were carried out in 18 cities of Russia and abroad (Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia). Prepared 4 doctors and 21 candidates of medical sciences. More than 40 textbooks have been published, more than 350 scientific articles, 8 monographs have been published.
In 2011, the staff of the Department of Acupuncture of St. Petersburg MAPO became part of the Department of Physiotherapy and Medical Rehabilitation of the North-Western State Medical University. I.I. Mechnikov.
In 2000, at the State Medical Academy. I.I. Mechnikov was created Department of Traditional Medicine and Homeopathy under the leadership of S.P. Pesonina. The department worked on a self-supporting basis. Every year, 300-350 students were trained at the department.

He is a leading scientist in the field of physical and rehabilitation medicine. He scientifically substantiated the concepts of heterogeneity and personalized physiotherapy, the syndrome-pathogenetic classification of physical methods of treatment, performed original works on physiogenetics, evidence-based and variant physiotherapy, and the organizational foundations of interdepartmental interaction in the rehabilitation process.
Author of more than 900 scientific and educational works, including 50 monographs, 10 textbooks, 5 national guidelines, 12 manuals and reference books, 5 inventions.
G.N. Ponomarenko formed a scientific school on the problem of "medical rehabilitation". With the advice and guidance of G.N. Ponomarenko completed and defended 12 doctoral and 47 master's theses, 5 students have their own scientific schools.
