On April 8, 1990, ABC aired the first episode of Twin Peaks, a series created by David Lynch about the murder of a schoolgirl in a small American town.
Cooper vs Palmer. Five questions about Twin Peaks
Thirty years ago, on April 8, 1990, Twin Peaks began airing on ABC. came up with it directed by David Lynch and screenwriter Mark Frost, and the plot told about the murder of a schoolgirl named Laura Palmer in the city of Twin Peaks. FBI agent Dale Cooper is investigating this murder, and in the process he learns about the unsightly aspects of life in the town, but at the same time he finds the killer (although this is completely unimportant). Twin Peaks ran for two seasons (or thirty episodes) with steadily declining ratings and closed in 1991. However, this did not stop him from getting a cult status.
Where is Twin Peaks located?
This is a small town in the northwestern United States, five kilometers from the Canadian border. The entire prosperity of the city is based on logging, and its population is 51,201 people. However, according to Lynch's plan, the city was supposed to be even smaller (5120 inhabitants), but the TV channel insisted on increasing the size of the scene. The name Twin Peaks (Twin Peaks, two peaks) the city received because of the two mountains nearby.
Twin Peaks was filmed in three different cities (albeit in the northwest, near Seattle), and one of the cities – Snoqualmie – even put up a "Welcome to Twin Peaks" sign. Of course, to attract tourists.
Who is Laura Palmer?
Twin Peaks high school student Laura Palmer (actress Sheryl Lee), with the murder of which the series begins: her naked and wrapped in a film body was found on the shore. Laura was very popular, she was chosen as the beauty queen, so the death of the girl caused a shock among the inhabitants of the town. However, during the investigation, it was found that Laura led a double life – she used drugs, she was regularly beaten and raped. Despite her death, Laura is one of the main characters in Twin Peaks. By the way, it is she who promises agent Cooper a meeting in 25 years – it is believed that the third season (released in 2017) appeared thanks to this promise.
Who is Agent Cooper?
FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (one of his most famous jobs) actor Kyle MacLachlan) and before coming to Twin Peaks there was a stormy life. He lost his beloved, who was killed by her husband – and also by his friend; became interested in Tibetan practices, which he tried to apply in investigations. During his stay at Twin Peaks, Cooper was remembered for his habit of speaking his thoughts into a tape recorder. When the series finally turned into a mystical track, the FBI agent found out about the existence of the Black Lodge, in which he could get answers to his questions. But the visit there does not end too well – although Cooper receives a promise from Laura to meet again.
What is the Black Lodge?
A mystical place symbolizing evil, the entrance to which is located near the city of Twin Peaks. True, this entrance does not open too often (during the approach of Jupiter and Saturn), but if this happens, BOB can come out of the Black Lodge – a creature that can inhabit people and commit crimes on their behalf. BOB is the answer to the question "Who killed Laura Palmer?", but this answer is essentially useless. In the mythology of "Twin Peaks" there is a place for the White Lodge, but no one has found the entrance to it. In the series, the inside of the Black Lodge is shown as the Red Room; perhaps this room connects both wigwams.
Who is David Lynch?
One of the most iconic and influential directors of modern cinema. He has four Oscar nominations, two for his debut film Eraserhead and one each for the thriller Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive. The award itself, Lynch, however, also has – in 2020 he won the honorary prize of the American Academy ("for outstanding achievements in cinema"). Lynch's other works include the science fiction film Dune (an adaptation of Frank Herbert's novel), the thriller Lost Highway, and the drama Inland Empire.
Twin Peaks was conceived as an experiment, but Lynch was not allowed to complete it. He directed six episodes out of thirty in the first two seasons, although among them were the pilot and the finale. However, the third season of the series, which was released in 2017, completely looks like the director intended – at his insistence, even the duration was increased to 18 episodes. However, the former popularity could not be achieved, but the Twin Peaks fans, having received what they wanted (all this time they demanded a continuation), finally calmed down.
