After the death of a genius, a mass of his disordered sketches with descriptions were not exhibited anywhere for more than 400 years. An impressive collection of da Vinci's anatomical drawings has been digitized by the British organization Royal Collection Trust, in which they are stored.

To understand human physiology, da Vinci studied the structure of the body and performed autopsies. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York published an article stating that many Renaissance artists had to study anatomy in order to accurately depict human figures.

Da Vinci approached anatomy with the same scientific interest as he approached architecture, engineering, the development of a flying machine, or the creation of weapons. He provided many of his anatomical drawings with detailed descriptions, which he did using mirror lines. The scientist used this method for keeping diaries.
