The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends continuing vaccination against COVID-19 with a drug from the British-Swedish concern AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford. The benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risks associated with it, according to a WHO statement released on Wednesday, March 17. AstraZeneca is currently reviewing AstraZeneca's latest security data, and the results of the review will be announced as soon as it is completed.

Vaccination against COVID-19 will not reduce the number of cases of other diseases or deaths as a result of them, notes WHO. Thromboembolic complications are common and venous thromboembolism is the third most common cardiovascular disease in the world, the statement continued. In the context of large-scale vaccination, reports of diseases among vaccinated people are common, but this does not necessarily mean that they were caused by the vaccination, the WHO further notes, while at the same time indicating the need to investigate these cases.

Several European countries have suspended the use of AstraZeneca

Earlier there were reports of possible severe side effects of the AstraZeneca vaccine, in connection with which Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and several other countries suspended its use. In particular, in Germany, three out of seven detected cases of cerebral vein thrombosis among vaccinated patients led to the death of patients. In Austria, a 49-year-old nurse died of clotting problems 10 days after being vaccinated, and her 35-year-old colleague developed a pulmonary embolism.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said it sees no reason to refuse AstraZeneca's vaccine. The final conclusion of the EMA is expected on March 18.
